Description (Last modified by djce)

I was trying to add the aliases "Sting & the Police" and "Sting and the Police" to both the artist "Sting" and the artist "The Police" since their combined greatest hits has been repeatedly entered under the that title rather than as a VA compilation.

I assume that if someone gets a new pressing of this CD and tries to tag it then they will be asked the artist name, enter "Sting & the Police" and be told that no CD with that number of tracks exist. If they were presented with the option of "Sting" and "The Police" then the album would be listed under either.

But when I went to enter the aliases for the second time, it failed silently with no indication of why the alias was not accepted. I assume it was duplication as various test aliases were accepted with no problem.

I can't immediately see why two artists having the same alias is a bad thing, but if it is, then an error message saying something like "Alias already attached to Artist x" wolud be nice.

Indeed, there is currently a unique index on "name" (i.e. the alias itself) on the alias table. I can think of no good reason why that index needs to be unique.

Having uniqueness for aliases does have one advantage: on several occasions, I was entering "English name" aliases for Asian artists, and got an error that the name already existed; this revealed an existing (identical) artist with a variant name (often traditional vs. simplified Chinese) that should be merged with the one I was working with. However, this advantage could also be obtained by having an "are you sure" page for adding an alias that exactly matches an existing alias (or artist name).

Changing the priority because it does now give an error and a link to the artist already using the alias.

that has nothing to do with the "Priority" of getting this feature added.

priority is about how important a bug/rfe is to the database, not how its implentation is to the user(s), if it is breaking something or if its implementation is nonessential, as it now has an error message, it's only 'normal'
